midterm

At the end of week 6 you will have an in-class midterm (I know, not quite midterm time yet, but that's what we're calling it). A list of design terms WILL be included (but no definitions). You are also welcome to incorporate terms not on the list that you remember from White.

Bring a blue book.

As promised, your questions will look something like this:

  1. In a 2-4 page response (single-spaced) describe whether or not you think (design 1: provided) is an effective text. Couch your answer in terms of purpose, audience, and strategies, making sure to use White's terminology in order to justify your answer.
  2. In a 2-4 page response (single-spaced) describe whether or not you think the redesign of (design 2: provided) is a signficant improvement over (design 3: provided). Again, couch your answer in terms of purpose, audience, and strategies, making sure to use White's terminology in order to justify your answer.
  3. Scenario. You will be given a design scenario and asked to describe what type of text you would design to solve the problem. Eg: you have been asked to design a billboard for WSU. This billboard will be located in Seattle and is geared towards recruiting high-school students who are leaning towards UW. What would your design look like? Feel free to sketch it out (not required). You must describe what your design would look like (using as much White terminology as possible) and justify why your design would be effective.
