Project 4: Portfolio
due: email me the link by noon on Friday, 12/11/09

Objective 1: Design a portfolio for the job market. You DO NOT have to include work from this class, but you are welcome to. I want the portfolio to be usable and practical for the realities of your life, so include what you deem appropriate. Look at samples and tips from the resources page for inspiration.

Objective 2: Present your portfolio (it doesn't have to be 100% done, but should be close) to the class during week 15. This presentation should be 5-7 minutes long (with 5 minutes for q&a). The presentation is essentially a pitch for your design and development choices. Look to the paper requirements for tips on what to cover. This presentations MUST BE PROFESSIONAL. You cannot simply walk us randomly through your site. There needs to be an intro, body, and conclusion and you need to have clear points along the way. Feel free to use the q&a time to ask the audience specific questions about your site.

Objective 3: Write me a 2-3 page double-spaced letter (use business letter format) that does the following:

  • Explains the specific purpose of your site. Keep in mind what you're trying to sell yourself as. Eg: "The purpose of this site is to illutrate my skills in (things) and to come across as (this type of person)."
  • Describes the audience for your site. What type of jobs would you send this link to? What do you think they'll be looking for? Why? Consider looking at sample job ads for specific job requirements.
  • Describes the strategies you used in order to convey that purpose to that audience. Consider layout, color, images used, navigation structure, usability, coding format (trust that if you're applying for web design jobs, people will absolutely view your source code), and anything else you feel was a choice.
  • In all of this, any terminology and specific references you can make to class readings will push you in the magical A range. Without this, I will have a hard time giving you anything above a B.
